Hombo Shuzo, the Kagoshima drinks house founded in 1872, steeps fresh green plums each June at its Hoshigura cellar — Nanko, large-fruit and Shirakaga varieties — into Joto Umeshu, made without flavourings, colourings or acidifiers. It took platinum at Kura Master 2023 and gold in 2024; a Chiran-tea version follows at 10% ABV.
